What an incredible week last week, when our fabulous little town played host to one of the most remarkable races on the planet – and it’s ALL the way around the planet! With the
Clipper Round the World Yacht Race in town there were a whole host of events in town and the place was buzzing! Our very own mascot, Coolio, even got to live out his Titanic dream posing at the prow of the Our Isles and Oceans boat, he was also honoured to meet the founder of the entire race series, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston.
The race is brainchild of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail solo non-stop around the world, the first Clipper Race took place in 1996. Since then, almost 6,000 Race Crew from all walks of life and more than 60 nations have trained and raced in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race; the only race in the world where the organisers supply a fleet of identical racing yachts (eleven), each with a fully qualified skipper and first mate to safely guide the crew.
There was Oban Whisky tours & tastings, The Oban High School Band piped the crews onboard for departure, highland dancing, fundraising charity events, a beach clean, food and drink festival village, live music from the utterly amazing SKERRYVORE (now THAT was a night out!).
Congratulations to everyone who put in so much effort with all the activities and events, and also helping make our town look so fantastic for the week! We really hope all the crews and organisers enjoyed their visit to Oban & we can’t wait to welcome them back again in the future.
Haste ye back ❤️
Many thanks to Shelia Macintyre & Kevin McGlynn for the photos.
